Considering making a,” locost”(a lotus 7 based chassis) and cramming an na 1uz into it. The idea would be for a slightly wider frame with a longer wheelbase, maybe seat sliders, wider track, 5 lug because I still have the sc400 brakes sitting around..
Half assed mock ups in adobe illustrator to see how things fit. Each cube on the graph represents 1ft.
Havnt decided on solid axle or not and the actual chassis dimensions, hopefully the Haynes manual will give a better idea when it shows up.
Not entirely committed yet but I’ve picked up a welding table, bought a build manual, and enough square tube to build a chassis table for when the mini isnt taking up all the garage real estate.
Here are the parts already laying around: 1uzfe, megasquirt, fuel pumps, some wiring, front hubs, front brakes, steering rack, automatic trans(not a fan of using that but its laying around), 1 k03 turbo, 4 gt25 knockoffs, and a radiator, it’s not an impressive list in the grand scheme of building a car from scratch but it has most of the drivetrain and front suspension which should be enough to get started with the first half of the chassis.
Or maybe it would be better to start with a wrecked 350z and harvest all of its parts to stand a chance at smog compliance....... which negates the point of using up all the excess parts lying around.

I like where this is headed. :P
I've wondered about building a Locost using a Chevy Volt battery pack and a Warp 9 or Warp 11 motor. It'd be fairly heavy, but could be a blast.

It's just a skateboard for your batteries so with 2 warp 11's itd be plenty of fun, especially with the instant torque

DO IT!!!!!!
Google a "442" build. Its a Locost thats 4 inches longer, 4 inches wider, and 2 inches taller (I think I got those right). Its desiged to accommodate A) larger drivers and B) larger engines.

Im hoping the haynes manual has that included.
The 442e looks like the best bet but I’m not convinced about room around the pedals with the transmission width, so might end up not strictly following any plans
Paperweights about 2 weeks away from being operational again, then the chassis table can begin. Mmmmm aybe some cleanup in the meantime

Go for it!
Of course, I’m saying that, and I’m 2.5 years into a tube frame build of my own design... It’s still sitting on the build table.
But I might just have it on the ground by the end of the year! Then I only need to make sure the engine still fits, the axles actually bolt up, then figure out the steering, brakes, clutch, seats, seat belts, floor, firewall, gas tank, wiring, shifter, parking brake... and probably a lot of other things I’m forgetting.
(That’s my best full frame picture I have so far).

“Bad Ideas inbound”? Might have wanted to pick a better title this seems interesting.

I’ve often thought it would be fun to do one of these with a rotary engine. Or any other engine. Really, I just want to built a ton of these with a wide assortment of random engines just because.

Thats amazing, there are too many questions!
What design do you have a design in mind for the suspension geometry?
What power plant?

Theres all the room for any sort of turbo setup you could ever want too.
In particular a compound turbo setup using a k03 feeding a gt25..... on each side of the engine.(not actually gonna do that but it’s a dream since I’m one ebay turbo away from being able to make that happen)

Will you need to pass emissions? A s this is a home build, I figured you wouldn’t have to meet emissions or safety or airbags or any of that.

Hey, ask away! (And forgive the messy work area in the pics).
Front suspension is a dual A-arm using a Miata hub and steering rack. I forget the exact dimensions right now, but I’m not sure if they’re ideal anyways.
Rear suspension is kind of a trailing arm/dual a-arm hybrid (some UTVs use this layout) also using Miata hubs. I would have used dual A arm if I could, but the engine was too big for it to work like I wanted to.
Engine is a 1.8L B18B1 from a ‘94 Integra with a 5 speed, mounted behind the driver. The Integra axles actually fit the Miata hubs, but I’ll have to have the hubs modified a bit to make the axle nut fit... Hopefully that will actually work.
But, when it’s all done, hopefully it will be under 1500 pounds and have 140hp, which can always be increased if I find it boring. So far though, I’m happy with how it’s turning out, but there’s a lot left to do still.

No safety standards past the brake and lamp inspection but sounds like youll need receipts to prove everything isnt stolen, meet a tailpipe emissions test, and still have all the emissions equipment that came standard with the engine(including evap, which might be odd for certain engines and gas tank situations).

Wouldn’t want to hurt the environment with however few hand built cars actually get finished.
Id like it to be road legal which would probably have to wait until moving out of state. Alas these projects usually take years so I'll cross that bridge when I get there

Are you sourcing your suspension joints from anywhere in particular? The idea of having everything adjustable like that is attractive if whatever suspension design turns out to be rubbish.
Did you mock the whole thing up on cad(or similar program) first?
Wh at square tube dimensions?
It's kind of amazing that the acura cvs fit the miata hubs, I take it they dont poke through far enough?

All of the heim joints are QA1 PCMR8-10, which aren’t cheap ($10 each) , but I was wanting that adjustability that you mentioned for exactly the same reason. The ball joints on the front are Miata lowers and the uppers are a tie rod end from a Mazda B2000 pickup (They have the right diameter and taper to match the Miata upper ball joint hole ).
I did build the entire thing in CAD before I got started, partially because I wanted to make sure everything would work ok, and partially because I to build something of my own and didn’t have the space/time/money to start. So far, I’ve only found a few changes that required adjustments to the original CAD.
But if you do some CAD work before you build, make sure your human shaped stand in is actually human sized... The ones I used were short in the legs and long in the torso, which caused one of my bigger changes to the design.
Tubing is a mix of 1.25in x 1.25in square and 1.25in round, both are 16 gauge. Suspension tubing is 1in round 11 gauge, which fits the QA1 rod end threaded fittings.
And you’re correct, the Integra axles don’t poke through far enough to get the nut on, so I’ll either have to machine the hubs or try and Frankenstein some axles.

I would very much like to build one of these some day (drivetrain TBD) so I think you should do it and share it heavily.
